Hi Don

I wanted to write and let you know that my cichlids are breeding, or starting to,
in the caves I got from you!  :)  everyone in the tank isn't so happy, but I have
two males and a female who are quite happy!  :)

Interesting tidbit for you... I have both types of caves, with and without bottom.
One male chose a cave with the bottom, the other male dug a huge hole that goes
from the middle of a large bottomless cave down under the backside and continues
for a large area behind the cave.  The same female "visits" both caves and they
dance around happily.

So, mbuna with a choice of bottom or nonbottom caves.. go figure.. they have their
own taste in housing obviously!  also I'll throw in.. the bottomless cave is the
largest one in the tank, while the cave with the bottom is of course much smaller.
Males are almost identical size, dominance of one over the other is there, but you
have to really watch to see because they are so far both acting much the same to each
 other.

This is all new to me.. I'm enjoying it !!

hope all is well with you

Don-

It took the fish about a week to decide on which cave they
wanted to reside in. Then one of the females set up house
in one of them. That's where she's been hanging out for the
past week or so. I was beginning to wonder what was going
on in there since I couldn't see in there and couldn't even
manage to angle a flashlight into the opening.

My questions were answered today when I noticed both the
female and male hanging out together on the opposite side
of the tank, away from their cave. That's when I noticed
several dozen fry zooming about within short range of their
mother. She's taken to chasing down any that wander away,
inhaling them, returning to the rest of her brood, and
unceremoniously spitting the errant fry back into the rest
of the brood. Now we'll have to see what the survival
percentage is. The parents seem extremely diligent and
should manage just fine unless my larger Altispinosas
get too hungry. Unlikely to be a problem though.

Since I've had no luck raising fry beyond 1/4" in size,
I'm planning to leave the new batch in the tank with
their parents.

I'll keep you posted. I'm waiting to see if the wild
pair of cave breeders that I have will mate next.
