Skill Levels

Rocket kits range in skill level construction from very basic to very advanced. The bulk pack rockets are available in the first three series descriptions.Below is a brief description of each skill level.

  1. RTF, Ready to Fly, no construction is required

  2. E2X® Series -- Almost Ready to Fly
  3. Rockets can normally be completely finished and ready to fly in less than one hour.
  4. Easy assembly - no modeling experience required.
  5. Recommended for the first time builder, younger students or when construction time is a factor.
  6. Beta(TM) Series -- Skill Level 1
  7. Single stage rockets powered by a single engine no more powerful than a "C".
  8. Previous model rocket experience would be helpful, but not necessary.
  9. Recommended for upper-level Elementary, Junior and Senior High School.
  10. Explorer(TM) Series -- Skill Level 2
  11. Single or multi-stage rockets powered by engines no more powerful than a "D".
  12. Average to above average modeling experience required.
  13. Suggested for those with previous model rocket experience.
  14. Recommended for advanced Junior and Senior High School programs.
  15. Challenge(TM) Series -- Skill Level 3
  16. Single or two engine cluster or multi-stage rockets powered by engines no more powerful than an "E".
  17. Will challenge the modeler's skills.
  18. Suggested for those with previous model rocket experience.
  19. Master(TM) Series -- Skill Level 4
  20. Master modeling skills are a must.
  21. Construction is very complex.
  22. Previous model rocket experience a must.
  23. Pro(TM) Series
  24. Single or multi-engine cluster rockets or multi-staged rockets powered by higher impulse model rocket engines.
  25. Serious modelers only - recommended for those 16 years of age and older.
  26. Advanced heavy-duty construction techniques.

Ok, What Do I Need To Get Started ?

If you are just getting into rocketry you will need the following;
Rocket
Engine(s)
Launch Pad & Rod
Electrical Controller (with batteries)
Parachute Wadding
Field to fly in

A great way to start in the hobby of model rocketry is to purchase a ROCKETRY STARTER SET.These sets come with everything you need (expect batteries, glue & paint) to get started.

After you have your starter set you may wish to purchase extra packs of engines andparachute wadding for additional flights. The INFO button on each line of our shopping cart will give detailed information on each rocket! A list of recommended engines is provided so that you can select engines that will work properly in your rocket.

For each flight you will need a new engine and several pieces of parachute wadding. The parachute wadding protects yourparachute from hot ejections gases. Each pack of Estes engines come with model rockets igniters, it may we wise to have an extra pack of igniters on hand just incase of a misfire.

Next try a few more rocket kits. All Estes rockets will fly on your Estes launch pad that comes with your starter set. See the explanation of Skill Levels above so that you select a kit that falls into your experience level.

When you are ready to fly your rocket for the first time try to wait for a clam day with winds of under 15 MPH. Use the smallest recommended engine for you first flight.

Estes engines are rated from 1/2A to E with the 1/2A being the least powerful and the E the most powerful. Ever letter up increase the total power by about 100%, so a B engine is twice a powerful as an A engine.

The engine type code printed on the case has three parts:A - Total Impulse The letter part of the code indicates the total impulse (or "push") produced by the engine. Each succeeding letter has twice the total impulse of the previous letter (i.e. a "B" has twice the total impulse of an "A", etc.). 8 - Average Impulse The first number of the code is the engine's average of thrust divided by the burn time in newtons-seconds (4.45 newtons=1lb of force) 3 - Delay Time The second number of the code is the amount of time between the end of the propellant burn and the parachute ejection charge (in seconds).

Literally hundreds of millions of model rocket motors have been produced and safely flown in the last 40 years, a testimony to their safe design and ease of use.
